the temporary corner

this is the corner of the living room that used to have a media cabinet. now it has the computer desk (formerly in champ's room), and it is a small replica of my bedroon five years ago, only without the bed. it won't stay like this forever, since the computer desk is thick with wires and papers and we'd like the living room to look neat. today someone came and picked up the old coffee table, and then someone else came over and made a carpet sales estimate. our house, like us, is slowly getting ready for the baby.

whoooaaa i am on the roof

we have a leak somewhere but we can't find the source, so i called a roofing company and they sent a helpful dude out. i went up on the roof to assess the situation with him and took this photo, in which you can see a bird's-eye view of our backyard and also the new retaining wall. our roof has a steep pitch and i did not feel secure in my footing, so i wobbled along while the roofer, a sure-footed mountain goat, looked and poked. he might have found the problem! we will find out with tonight's rains.

flu shot queue

today i got a flu shot. it is the first time i have ever received one, as far as i remember. i rarely get the flu so it has always seemed like a bad use of my time. the spectre of fatherhood has changed this calculation, as it has so many others: it's not a big deal if i get the flu, but what if i give it to kelly, world's most beautiful and currently pregnant wife? what about champ? best not to risk it. i swallowed my pride and queued with the other employees.

salsa with roasted vegetables!

okay, kelly + food = picture of the day. it is a simple formula combining two of my favorite things! tonight she made salsa using vegetables she broiled until just slightly charred, giving the final product a fire-roasted taste. also today, we rearranged some furniture and listed some of the old stuff on craigslist. i hooked up my old receiver and speakers to the television--itself a relic of another era when crt was the dominant display technology--and now it sounds much better.

ikea: the day after

going to ikea is sort of like having too much to drink. you have wild, colorful dreams of sturdy, clean-lined furniture resting in your home and of your guests passing by it and making favorable remarks ("where did you get that? i must have one!"). but the next day, you wake up and your living space looks entirely identical. the only difference is the addition of a flat cardboard box, filled with mysterious, rectangular pieces of wood and a single allen wrench. thankfully ikea has gotten better over the years and this latest purchase--a coffee table pictured here next to the table it will replace--was up and running in thirty minutes flat.

ikea, ikea

today was a busy day! first we went to the 13 Coins restaurant for brunch. then we went to a cloth diaper store to learn about cloth diapers. the cloth diaper store turned out to be someone's living room. then we went to have lunch with our friends david and diana. then we went to ikea and kelly made a lamb talk (pictured) and we bought a coffee table and some baskets (not pictured). then we went to babies "r" us (pretend the r is backwards and then pretend to roll your eyes at the saccharine pretense) and looked at diaper bags and things. then we were tired and we went home. the end.

chocolate cloud cake and birthday part three

so tonight there was a little family birthday party for me at david and megan's place! megan made my grandmother's roast beef tacos and kelly made my favorite cake, a rich flourless number with a lot of dark chocolate and butter, a bit of orange and whipped cream... it's heavenly. i meant to take a picture at david and megan's but i was too busy eating. i sure do talk about food a lot.

three bean chili and cornbread for dinner!

this is kelly about to enjoy some three bean chili that she made from scratch tonight! it was delicious. also today: we had a routine doctor's appointment and got to hear champ's heartbeat again! it is a reassuringly strong and steady sound, though not what you'd expect if you have never heard it: more of a whoosh-whoosh-whoosh than a lub dub, lub dub, lub dub.

office remodel: after

here is my office post-remodel! it is arranged the same but the walls are less cluttered now. the art now on the walls has had a curious journey: i first purchased it for my apartment, and it moved into the living room when i bought the house. shortly after our marriage, the art went into exile in the home office to make space in the living room for warmer and more cheerful things. now, with champ on the way and the home office going by the name "nursery", the photographs have left the house entirely for their fourth, and perhaps final, resting place here at my work office.

jazz band

today i had lunch with a friend at the commons, which is a new part of the microsoft campus that is basically a mall with a food court and franchise stores. it is a long ways from my part of campus but it is occasionally worth the commute because of the better food options and the bewildering variety of "on stage" performances, which have included one dude playing sitar, a girl handing out wildflower seeds with a salon advertisement on each packet, and this jazz band full of microsoft employees, blue security badges still dangling from their belts as they played to a largely uncaring and probably tone-deaf audience.
