jonathan’s photos

one per day, from my cellular telephone.

i hope this wasn't what it looked like

ok, so today i am leaving the cafeteria with a happy stomach full of another one of kelly's creations when i notice a used bowl on the table by the cafeteria entrance. this table usually contains pamphlets, not dirty dishes, so i took a closer look. now, i cannot be sure, but it ALMOST looks like they made a sample of the day's special and set it on the table to entice the indecisive customer, and THEN SOMEONE ATE IT RIGHT OFF THE TABLE. now i'm only guessing here but a lot of computer people have no sense of what's socially appropriate...

goodbye saltines, i am sorry we did not eat you in time

tonight was clean out the pantry night. in my less enlightened days this would have meant two garbage bags of unopened and expired food, but now we are an environmentally conscious couple. as kelly retrieved expired food, i helped separate it into compostable, recyclable, and plain rubbish components, a task that requires one to learn small efficiencies such as the quickest way to empty a bag of saltines (use a pocketknife to make a quick slit all the way across the length of the bag, then invert the bag over the compost, holding at the ends. shake.) the resultant mess of expired powders, snacks, and mixes was dusty but did not smell offensive. kelly, who is *not* nesting, and i both feel better with a clean pantry.

we are painting champ's room!

hello photo of the day readers, this is my sister katherine! she is helping me paint champ's room, because she is nice and because paint fumes are bad for kelly and champ. you cannot see it in this monochromatic photo, but the walls are being changed from beige to a cheery yellow ("banana cream") in a matter of hours. i also painted the ceiling with some magical ceiling paint that goes on a deep pink and dries to a bright white. you can see exactly where you've painted as long as it's still wet!

...but don't call me a computer repairman

kelly's laptop, howard, was a little slow so i ordered some more memory for him. tonight, i swapped out the ram chips with the new ones (as i have done on dozens of computers over the last decade) and turned howard on and ... nothing. howard's motherboard, always a little flaky, is more or less a goner. i got him to turn on once in fifty attempts, and he worked perfectly with his shiny new memory, but it hasn't happened again. reseating the chips or replacing them with the old ones is likewise ineffectual. after reading a half-dozen message board posts by folks with the same computer and the same problem, i called it quits so we could watch The Office--and our digital converter box wouldn't pick up the channel. right on cue, the roof leak i thought i had fixed by caulking the skylight returned in force. drip drip drip. some days it feels like the universe has got it in for me.

just call me mr. refrigerator repairman

tonight i felt like a real repair person! our refrigerator's drawer has been broken forever, and a few days ago i ordered a SLIDE ASSEMBLY RHS (that means "right hand side" in repair person talk, you probably wouldn't understand) from a website that had an exploded view of our refrigerator with part numbers. it arrived today and here it is about to be installed! notice the old SLIDE ASSEMBLY RHS drooping nearby. i am going to pretend that it was hard to do but really it was just about as simple as unscrewing the old one and screwing the new one in.

matchstick pasta!

tonight i made dinner! this is a dish that kelly discovered on 101cookbooks.com, which is one of her favorite recipe sites (and, by proxy, mine, because she keeps making delicious recipes from it). matchstick pasta is made with short pieces of whole wheat spaghetti and pomegranate seeds--which, together, look like a matchstick--with kale in a sauce made of pureed olive oil, pistachios, garlic, and salt. it is simple and delicious and you can sneak pistachios while you are shelling them.

champ at twenty weeks

today we had another ultrasound! this is a profile of champ's head, one of the dozens of pictures the ultrasound tech took in between trying to get a clear shot of champ, who has lately developed a knack for kicking. everything looked wonderful--steady heartbeat, all the major organs in place, and starting to look more and more like a baby. it's still a little surreal and a lot miraculous. champ, we can't wait to meet you for real in just a few months.

ewwwwwww

our refrigerator has a busted drawer, and it has been that way for as long as we've owned the home. today i decided to Do Something About It, a task which required the model number of our refrigerator so that a matching replacement part could be ordered. i searched in vain for the number and then consulted the internet. "try under the kick plate," suggested the internet. i did, and i found this incredibly disgusting piece of paper. it did not have the model number but it had a neat electrical diagram of the refrigerator's circuitry! i later found the model number near the lower right door hinge.

date night at delancey

our journey to delancey began several months ago, when we attended a talk and book signing by a local food blogger, a red-headed woman who writes under the sobriquet "orangette". this is her restaurant. we got seats at the bar and watched the chefs make pizzas, stretching the crust and painting the sauce on in a spiral before baking them in a wood-fired oven. if you like highbrow pizza, we recommend it without reservation.
