a brief power outage made a fool of me tonight

continuing the grand seattle tradition of inexplicable outages on calm autumn evenings, our home lost power tonight at about half past ten. the power was out for exactly enough time to get ready for bed in the dark, crank up the rechargable book light, and settle in to enjoy some reading. i had not read more than a sentence or two when the power returned and the book light, about which i had become quite excited, became completely superfluous.

no power at the soft

today i arrived at work at around 8 am. at about 8:33, the power in our building went out and my office was instantly pitch-dark. i stumbled for the door and found my co-workers emerging, blinking, from their own offices. soon, we were eating doughnuts and playing games to pass the time in the darkened hallways lit only by emergency light. after an hour and a half with no electricity and no word from the authorities, i decided to go home, and was literally halfway out of my parking spot when the lights in the garage flickered to life. i sighed and pulled back in, and by the time i was back in my office most of the systems were coming back online.

warning: game difficulty is set to extra hard!

in a different hand beneath the warning: "just accept it: you got worse." there is also a post-it note on the machine itself imploring potential players not to insert pennies into the joystick, as it took forever to get the last one out. ... and this is what happens when you combine nerds, an arcade machine, flexible work hours, loose change, and unmonitored office supplies. i hope we've all learned our lesson.

pumpkin cheesecake with the mcphersons

tonight we had my sisters over for dinner and also david, my brother-in-law. megan brought curry crepes for an appetizer, kelly made herb-crusted salmon with orange-glazed kabocha squash for the main course, and katherine supplied pumpkin cheesecake for dessert. it was all very gourmet.

duct cleaning (warning, graphic photo of exposed filter)

we have never had the ducts cleaned, and since i have also not been great at changing the filter and the previous owners did approximately no maintenance, i feared for the worst when i gingerly made the call to sam hallak, microbiologist and owner of air duct cleaners of washington. he came over in a van and confirmed my worst fears: the ducts were filthy and several contained gaping holes that had been spewing hot air into our crawlspace. he spent almost five hours cleaning and i made a temporary repair with duct tape--the first time, in fact, that i have actually used duct tape on ducts.

a beautiful fall day

today was cool and sunny (PHOTO 1) and in the middle of the day i just walked out of my office with a bag of vegetables and kept walking until i reached my brother-in-law's office, and then i walked back. we had warm soup and fresh bread for dinner; in PHOTO 2 erik is displaying the remains of the second loaf of bread. the four of us polished off two loaves and kelly and stephanie had little to do with this.

stephen elop and the root connection

today i present to you images from two very different worlds! STEPHEN ELOP, a microsoft corporate president (seriously, search for the dude), serves a latte to one of the rank and file, which impressed me because the guy had never seemed terribly down to earth. later, i went to the ROOT CONNECTION farm to pick up our weekly share of vegetables. they have whiteboards indicating what to take and the whole thing runs on little more than the honor system.

morning commute, or: the glow of bellevue

this morning i dropped kelly off at work and took the highway to my office. the fog rolled in briefly, though the rest of the day was crisp and clear, and i realized that there are only so many more times i will make this drive, since our commuting style is going to change with the baby's arrival. big changes ahead.

finally, our dishwasher can be used again!

the dishwasher in our house hasn't drained properly since i bought the place in '06. i had a dishwasher guy look at it the same year, and after removing an avacado pit and several shards of glass left as a gift from the previous owners, he warned me that the real problem was a clogged t-junction behind the wall, a bewildering plumbing choice specific to houses built during a few years in the 90's. the problem gradually worsened and for the last year we've been doing all our dishes by hand. today i got a plumber out to look at it, and now the dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal like everyone else's.
