duct cleaning (warning, graphic photo of exposed filter)

we have never had the ducts cleaned, and since i have also not been great at changing the filter and the previous owners did approximately no maintenance, i feared for the worst when i gingerly made the call to sam hallak, microbiologist and owner of air duct cleaners of washington. he came over in a van and confirmed my worst fears: the ducts were filthy and several contained gaping holes that had been spewing hot air into our crawlspace. he spent almost five hours cleaning and i made a temporary repair with duct tape--the first time, in fact, that i have actually used duct tape on ducts.

a beautiful fall day

today was cool and sunny (PHOTO 1) and in the middle of the day i just walked out of my office with a bag of vegetables and kept walking until i reached my brother-in-law's office, and then i walked back. we had warm soup and fresh bread for dinner; in PHOTO 2 erik is displaying the remains of the second loaf of bread. the four of us polished off two loaves and kelly and stephanie had little to do with this.

stephen elop and the root connection

today i present to you images from two very different worlds! STEPHEN ELOP, a microsoft corporate president (seriously, search for the dude), serves a latte to one of the rank and file, which impressed me because the guy had never seemed terribly down to earth. later, i went to the ROOT CONNECTION farm to pick up our weekly share of vegetables. they have whiteboards indicating what to take and the whole thing runs on little more than the honor system.

morning commute, or: the glow of bellevue

this morning i dropped kelly off at work and took the highway to my office. the fog rolled in briefly, though the rest of the day was crisp and clear, and i realized that there are only so many more times i will make this drive, since our commuting style is going to change with the baby's arrival. big changes ahead.

finally, our dishwasher can be used again!

the dishwasher in our house hasn't drained properly since i bought the place in '06. i had a dishwasher guy look at it the same year, and after removing an avacado pit and several shards of glass left as a gift from the previous owners, he warned me that the real problem was a clogged t-junction behind the wall, a bewildering plumbing choice specific to houses built during a few years in the 90's. the problem gradually worsened and for the last year we've been doing all our dishes by hand. today i got a plumber out to look at it, and now the dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal like everyone else's.

check out our pantry!

the beans in this pantry were purchased at about 1/3 of their ordinary price. kelly has become quite good at working the specials and coupons for our staple foods, and when she sees a really good deal on a nonperishable, she strikes swiftly and decisively. we eat a lot of beans and yesterday she found a screaming deal on them; today she unloaded the bounty into neat rows in the pantry. then we cooked some dinner together and went to church with friends. it was a clear, brisk fall day.

goodbye, windfall tree...

the stump you see here about to be yanked out of the ground was, this morning, a 15-foot tree in our front yard. unfortunately for the tree, it was an unattractive weed tree and obstructed the stop sign. we will figure out something else to plant there. in the meantime, the yard looks slightly naked but much cleaner and neater. kelly and her mother both planted bulbs that will come up in the spring, so that baby mcpherson can come home to flowers.

indian date night!

i think i might have mentioned before that we have a jar of date night ideas, which we assembled earlier this year. this week we drew a slip of paper that instructed us to get indian take-out (we chose kanishka, our favorite indian joint) and watch a bollywood movie. we did and it was delightful. the film was in hindi and was a wonderfully cliche underdog story about a womens' field hockey team; i think it was called "chak de" but i also think i am spelling that incorrectly.

lootables

today was my friend matthew's last day at microsoft, and he cleaned out his office in preparation for departure. this small stack of microsoft-branded office supplies and knick-knacks were all that was left when he had taken his personal things, and he thoughtfully left a sign informing the rest of us that we could take the floatsam and jetsam. matthew was fluent in perl and x64 assembly and will be missed greatly.
