friday fest / matthew the keyboard hero

i could not decide on the picture of the day so once again you get two of them. (1) a tug of war held during this afternoon's "friday fest", an event held a few times a year at work to keep employee morale up. i always mutter "bread and circuses" under my breath but i still go because i like bread and circuses. (2) my co-worker matthew plays a game like guitar hero only it is on the computer and your keyboard is the controller. neat!

kelly is in dallas this weekend

this is a metaphorical picture of the day. the sad face and droopy flowers are a representation of kelly's absence this weekend; she is in dallas with friends and i am living like a bachelor in her absence. i tried to do some domestic things last night and i will not comment about the outcome except to say that roasting squash did not turn out to be one of my gifts.

microsoft daily double!

okay, this is two days' worth of pictures so make it last. in the first, i am walking back to my office yesterday after meeting with actual customers, which is picture of the day worthy because in my job we are quite insulated from the customers and can easily go years without spotting one. in the second, i am shocked to see that the car parked behind mine is a tesla roadster, and i whip out my camera phone in self-defense. (the tesla roadster runs entirely on electricity and also it costs $100,000.)

woah, a prize in my breakfast cereal!

when i was young and my favorite breakfast cereal's first ingredient was sugar-coated marshmallows, prizes in the box were a matter of routine. but now that i'm older and look for things like "protein" and "fiber" and other stuffy grown-up qualities, i have not received a prize in the box for many years... UNTIL TODAY. because today was the day that i opened a box of my sensible kashi crunch and discovered a free packet of sensible crackers inside, wrapped in the same vaguely translucent plastic that once protected the batman action figure from whatever chemical is used to make "crunch berries".

retaining wall progess report for sunday!

ok, i made more progress than this but i thought i'd snap a picture before it got dark. the 2nd level trench is now finished and i am busy filling, levelling, and compacting base gravel in the trench for the wall to rest on. also today we got to teach 4th grade sunday school (i didn't take a picture of that because it might be creepy) and i went to the root connection for kale, mustard greens, vita greens, and cilanto. we love greens in the mcpherson household!

do the puyallup!

today we went to the fair in puyallup! (you are probably wondering how to pronounce that word; it is "pyoo ahll up".) this is kelly eating a funnel cake next to a sign advertising some kind of truck thing. our friends aaron and andy and hillary were there too and we got to see weird al's brain in 3D, which was alone worth the price of admission.

the "Day of Caring" at northwest harvest

today 59 of my co-workers and myself (total 60) volunteered at a local food bank. this photo shows our team doing our most interesting job: sorting and boxing donations from food drives. i have occasionally tossed food into a collection bin and it was fascinating to be on the other end of the process. you would be surprised at what had been thrown into those bins: expired food (some over 10 years old), the remnants of a diet meal system, unlabeled and loosely tied bags of questionable beans.

this is the first year that i did not get on that bus

today was the microsoft company meeting, a massive event held at safeco field (the baseball stadium that is home to the seattle mariners). i have gone every year, but the content is only very occasionally valuable, and it takes the whole day and i am getting old and curmudgeonly about the whole thing because it is mostly a "get excited about the company!" show and that just doesn't do it for me any more. so i just watched a broadcast of the event on my computers in my office while i did work. it was very much more relaxing and i sipped my coffee while peace reigned in the empty hallways.

a bit presumptuous, perhaps?

someone stuck this sign on the fridge at work and it struck me as funny and a little presumptuous. i'm not sure it's the janitor's job to clean out the fridge, and if it is he has my respect. that place is a biohazard zone.

retaining wall progress report!

this is the most tedious part of the project--actually knocking down the hill, one pickaxe full of stony clay at a time. you can see here that there is not that much left--a few more days with the pickaxe and i can finally lay it to rest and begin building again. sorry for all the wall updates lately--it isn't that there isn't anything else going on, just that this project's progress is so visually rewarding that it makes any easy daily photo. we knowledge workers rarely have anything so tangible to show for our labor.
